WIDA ELD Standards
What is WIDA?
WIDA, or World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment, is a professional organization that promotes academic language development and academic achievement for linguistically diverse students. They do this through high quality standards, assessments, research, and professional development for educators.
What are the WIDA CAN DO Descriptors?
The WIDA CAN DO Descriptors are commonly used by ESL instructors in coaching mainstream teachers about differentiated instruction for English Language Learners (ELLs).
The WIDA CAN DO Descriptors are a collaborative tool that help teachers with class planning and may be used in lesson and/or unit plans or to observe students’ progress. The Descriptors were created simply in order to share with students’ family members to help them understand their child’s language development. There are five levels of development in four areas: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The CAN DO Descriptors provide teachers and administrators with a set of performance expectations according to the student’s language learning level. They do not include assessment strategies.
